Back on the Road.
But of course it wasn`t easy.
Finally, I can jump in my car and drive! If you do not have a second car, I suggest you get one!
Running even the smallest errands by motorcycle can be interesting, tricky, and very annoying
after a few months!!! Glad my dry cleaner is only on the corner!! :) But that is not important, I
spent alot of time in the junkyards, swap meets, and even parted out a basket case to get a few
odds and ends. It all started to fall into place, collected all the parts I needed, performed a gasket
and Krylon rebuild on the donor engine (79 z28 350). It went in effortlessly, everything bolted up
no problem, and on initial start up fried my ignition module. I dropped in a points distributor 180
degrees out, and of course didn`t realize my error until a few days later, as it didn`t even want to
backfire. Once I put it in correctly and dumped ALOT of fuel in it she fired right up, and that
was only the begginning of my problems,,,,,, Well it seems there are 2 types of U-joints in 2nd gens,
my rear needed big ones, the donor driveshaft had small ones. Jimmy-rigged it to get me around for
a few days (MAJOR VIBRATION!!!!), found a correct shaft and good used yoke. Problem solved.
So there I am driving the next day to talk to my paint guy (my busted front end stuff was actually
fixed!!!!) and it starts missing real bad. Barely get it home and then won`t start again. Distributor
came loose and retarted. So I advance it, and it still has a miss. #1 won`t fire. Changed the wire,
cap, no spark is coming out of the cap on #1. What the hell? How can one not fire with a brand new
cap? So after work in the middle of the night I swap my fresh Unilite in (Summit returns take
forever!!!!) and the damn thing fires right up and purrs like a kitten (oh I miss my big cam!). Timing
dead on, no miss. So she is running fine now, and did I mention that fiberglass cowl hood I got? No
more rubbing the air cleaner on the top of the hood!!! I need to snap some pics before I put the
front metal back on and after. I forgot how nice those Z wheels look......
