The New Motor
I love when that happens!
Who ever said that if something can go wrong usually will, was right on the money! I wiped
out a lifter and two cam lobes. What I learned next was advanced physics - you can neither
create nor destroy matter. When I dropped my pan there was soo much metal in it I had no
choice but to pull the motor. I found scratches on the crank, pistons, and cylinder walls.
Luckily a polish and final hone took care of that, and I upgraded to the forged pistons I
cheaped out on before. I studded the bottom end, and installed a big block oil pump
modified for small blocks. I would rather loose a few horse and not have to worry about oil
pressure! I found the Comp 280H too small for my needs, so I have installed a Crane
Saturday Night Special split pattern (535,550 with the 1.6 rockers) 238,244 duration at
.050. Stout enough for the mundane drive to work everyday! All these cars are drivers, no
trailer queens at the `Barn! So hopefully the motor will break in ok and I won`t be going
through this again next year! So thats my story, and I`m sticking to it!

Well, that motor is history! Hope whoever stole it put it in a race car and it blows sky high on
a race where big $$$ is involved. The current powerplant is a 79 Camaro motor (170 hp,
yippee!!) that now sports a Performer RPM, Mallory Unilite, and a Holley 600. New Dynomax
headers and my old Flowmaster exhaust finish the equation. Hmmm....maybe I will actually get
some decent gas mileage now.
